A Lighthouse at the centre of Rottnest Island was first constructed in 1849 and was 64.5 feet high (10 feet shorter than planned) making the light 167 feet above sea level, visable for 21 miles.
The lighthouse was officially opened on 1 June, 1851. In 1895 work began to replace the lighthouse with a new limestone tower which was opened on 17 March, 1896. The old tower was demolished, but the base remains.
